When we asked our chapter to suggest sisters who they would like to see spotlighted, several sisters were quick to recommend Hailey Lape. A junior studying Political Science and Women’s Studies, Hailey’s hard work and drive makes her stand out among her peers.
Hailey has continually demonstrated her passion for serving her community since joining ESA in the fall semester of her freshman year. In addition to her involvement in ESA, Hailey is currently an intern at DC SAFE (Survivors and Advocates for Empowerment). DC SAFE is an organization whose mission is to ensure safety and self-determination for survivors of domestic violence in the Washington, DC area through emergency services, court advocacy and system reform. Hailey has been at DC SAFE for almost a year now during which time she has worked a client base of 167, seeing them through the process.
Hailey comes alive when discussing the work she is involved in at DC SAFE and the milestones she has been able to reach with her client base. In sharing her experience she acknowledges that it can be challenging at times, noting the unfortunate reality that on average it takes eleven times for someone to leave a domestic violence situation; however she says the challenge has been a very rewarding one. She says she is happiest at her internship, when she is involved in making change happen and is able to see a difference being made.
When asked what she hopes to do after GW, Hailey says she would like to work for a few years, most likely with DC SAFE, and go back to continue her education and earn a Ph.D. in Gender Studies. Whatever is next for Hailey, we have no doubt her work will continue to motivate and inspire her fellow ESA sisters. Keep up the great work, Hailey!
